flashing light cannon pixma ip1600

I printed a couple of pages and everything looked fine.
I shut the printer off and 3 hours later tried to print and received
15 flashing lights indicating the printer could not recognize the ink
cartridge.

Both cartridges are 1/2 full and would not be out of ink.

I removed both cartridges and wiped all the contacts clean and
reinstalled and received the same message.

I reset the printer according to instructions, same problem.

Any suggestions

This is the only model that Canon makes that is a total piece of trash.
You can probably get an IP4300 for about $20.00 more that is worth twice
as much. I would use aftermarket ink in this printer and not care.

I picked one up for nothing and it worked real well for a time. It
printed fast. The cartridges were very tiny and I was refilling
constantly in small amounts. Then it did what yours is doing so I
threw it out. Easy come, easy go. I think it's made to be a throwaway
printer. We should have an IP1600 throwing contest. And I generally
love Canon products.
