flash drive letter

I have a flash (jump) drive letter (E) in "My Computer" that won't go away.
The flash drive is disconnected etc.. When I connect the flash drive to the
usb it is added with another drive letter (F) and works fine and that letter
and drive is removed when i remove the drive but the original drive letter
remains. Any ideas how to remove that erroneous "Removable Media" drive?

Do you have a printer with a flash drive slot? How about the front of your
computer or an external adapter that is left plugged in?

No, I don't have a flash plugged in anywhere else. I feel a bit dumb but I was just now able to remove it. I had to use the "safely remove hardware device" in my tray (even though XP doesn't require that). thanks
