Fixed "Page Cannot Be Displayed" Problem

Hello everyone, I last posted about my problem with the "Page Cannot Be
Displayed" problem. Since Microsoft seems to not want to come up with an
answer to help the IE6 users, I decided to try and fix it myself. After
months of going at it, I eventually did a combonation of things which
appreared to work. I can now browse any site as it should be before Microsoft
came out with any of the SPs. First of all let me give you my specs
reguarding this problem:

OS: Windows 98se
Internet Explorer version: 6.0 SP1

Here is what I did:

First- I installed AOL 9.0 making my IE explorer, Provided by AOL
*You can uninstall it afterwards
Second- I used Ad-aware 6.0 with the updated definitions and did a SYSTEM SCAN
URL: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Thrid- I used the Registry Mechanic by Winguides
URL: http://winguides.com/regmech/
Fourth- I used Window Washer 4.7 or any newer version
URL: http://www.window-washer.info/

Now I am sure that it was not ALL of these actions that caused IE to work.
My best guess would be to use the Ad-aware system scan followed by the Window
Washer (with custom options- be sure to check the box that says "with
bleach"). Totally clean your system of the unused and unwanted by checking
all boxes possible. I do not guarentee this to work, these are the actions I
took up to my IE finally browsing. Good luck, and I sure hope it works. I
apoligize for the lenghty post, but be assured that I will be finding a new,
shorter way of solving this same problem. Thank you.

My problem is similar to yours but I can open every page I
did before the updates except one. I went through a
similar process but used spybot to purge my XP notebook.
I reinstalled XP, maybe I should have deleted the old one
first but in any case nothing happened. I removed all
updates I mean all before reinstalling so upon the
reinstall any sps were installed simultaneously. I changed
browsers from explorer to Netscape. nothing! I dropped my
security to none. no good. the page I'm trying to get is
www.americatab.com a url i've been visiting for two
years with out a problem. A year ago I had similar
problem with any page, but I discovered if I fooled around
with MSACCESS or something then go to my browser it worked
fine. That cured itself. I have a windows 2K pc that has
never had this problem but it's a tower. Does this seem
like what you xperienced?

Well Retiree, let me first explain the problem I was having. There seemed to
be certain stages of the problem. First, my homepage could not be displayed,
then my most frequently pages, and then one by one it seemed all ".com" sites
would be affected by this problem. Just like you, the sites that I most
frequently visted for years would be affected by this "Page cannot be
displayed" problem. After my IE was totally wiped out, I began to experience
Explorer problems in my explorer.exe so I figured it was due to the same
problem since IE and Windows Explorer are closely related.

As for what you said about running the MSACCESS program or something like it
that caused IE to work fine, I cannot really say if that would have worked
for mine. Although I will say during and after my problem existed I used
Microsoft Word, Publisher, Powerpoint...etc. quite often. The way I see it is
the programs that I ran up to the solution to the "Page cannot be displayed"
problem were some sort of maintnence or IE file altering program. My first
thought in this problem was that there was a Proxy set through spyware, but I
quickly found that was not the case. So it was probably my IE REGISTRY files,
then I found that that MAY have been the problem but I was just not looking
in the right places hence the reason I used the Regisrty Mechanic (which I
recommend using LAST due to .dll problems). So to answer your question as to
if it yours was similar to my problem, yes it was, but the difference lies in
the type of program used. I believe it was truly a combination of the
Ad-aware 6.0 SYSTEM SCAN(not smart scan)* followed by the Window Washer (with
the BLEACH option on)* and that probably clear or repaired a file(s) that
caused IE to go into the "Page cannot be displayed" state. For a 100%
solution I cannot give because I cannot say exactly what caused this to occur
in IE. All I can say is what appeared to work for me, and because the
programs I used altered IE in some way, then that utimately was the solution
in my opinion. Sorry for the lengthy post and Good Luck to everyone with this
problem.
