For probably a year I have been having trouble with my C drive. I could not
run a chkdsk to see if it was healthy. But as of late my xp pro system
began to show signs of trouble. It still ran fine but I could not run a
"chkdsk" in recovery console or safe mode. I could not run a spyware check
either. I identified about 5 bad files but they would not delete. I moved
a lot of my software to my D drive because I began getting errors. I was
not really ready to do a repair because my system was running ok--no weird
stuff happening.

I took my system hard disk off and plugged it into my son's computer, after
some coaxing, finally got it recognized by his xp pro system. I ran a
"dskchk d: /f" from the command line and it actually worked. wonderful!! I
then did the standard xp disk checker, which usually takes a dog's age
anyway and does a more complete job. I then reinstalled the hard disk back
on my system and got it to come up without all the usual complaints, aches,
and pains. I'm now running a de-frag which I have not been able to do for
well over a year. The frag histogram of my disk looks something like
scrambled eggs--very patriotic--lots of red white and blue in it.

if you click on my computer, then right click your c drive for properties
then click on tools you can do a ckdisk but after you check the 2 items, then
you must click ok, then reboot and then ckdsk will come up . i do it all the
time to check expecially after installing new software.

There is normally no need to run a surface scan unless you are having
serious file system errors and suspect that the drive may have developed
bad sectors.
