FIX MSWord's horizontal measure; "Column" is not acceptable!

I see that the default display of horizontal position is some measure
called “Column.†It seems to be a count of characters, spaces and tabs to
the left of the cursor, not the physical position of the cursor in inches or
millimeters. I assume the “Column†default is an archaic remnant from the
days of fixed-point type (e.g., Courier) that has never been upgraded to
accommodate modern-day fonts. Is there some way (that I have not found) in
Customize or Options, or elsewhere, to change the bottom display line to show
a more realistic measure of the cursor’s horizontal position?

The status bar is not configurable.

I do agree that 'column' is not really appropriate terminology but is there
a particular measure you would like to see?
