A new tab similar to 'decimal point tab' called 'equals sign tab' which
allows equations to be concistently aligned at the same position on a page.

MathType, in fact, already has one of those. You're right -- there's
not one in Word, but if you're using MathType for your equations, you
have your choices of tabs -- left, center, right (which Word has).
MathType also has a decimal tab (aligning a column of numbers to the
right of the units digit, whether a decimal point exists or not) and a
"relational tab". The latter aligns not only on the = symbol, but on
any relational operator -- not equal to, proportional to, less than,
etc.
