First logoff or shutdown command ignored; second request accepted

My computer ignores the first request to logoff or shutdown, but executes
properly on the second request. I used the XP troubleshooter (and msconfig)
to trace this problem to the Windows Management Instrumentation service, but
that service seems necessary for other activities. This problem just started
happening recently, and might be related to Windows Media Player 11 (in fact,
the first time I ran the troubleshooter the Media Player service appeared to
be the problem, but I rolled back and reinstalled Media Player 11 at which
time the troubleshooter pointed to the Management Instrumentation Service).

This isn't a serious problem, but is something of an annoyance. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

The WMI files are part of XP system files. The command to repair all damaged
system files is:

SFC /SCANNOW

This didn't seem to help at first, but this time I noticed the first request
resulted in my antivirus icon being removed from the system tray. I
uninstalled the antivirus program, reran the sfc /scannow command,
reinstalled the antivirus program, and executed a shutdown (it's late!). For
this occasion, at least, it shut down on the first request. I'll experiment
more tomorrow, but fingers are crossed that this did the trick. Thank you!

Well, my initial response to this suggestion was premature. I apologize for
the delay in posting this follow-up, but the computer in question is not my
primary and I don't use it every day. I was on the computer in question last
night and it again ignored the initial shutdown command. Any thoughts on what
else might be causing the problem?

Thanks,

Dave
