Hi,
I've just installed a Gigabyte GO-B5232D Combo drive then downloaded
firmware for it, now my D drive has vanished and when I start my PC the
following message appears
Secondary Hard Disk 0 Not Found
Secondary Hard Disk 1 Not Found
I've tried a system restore without any luck and my E drive is still working
ok, could anyone suggest anything ?
My PC is a Dell Dimension 4550, running on XP Home Edition SP2,
thanks in advance

Firstly have a look at the old drive and see what the jumper setting was.
Then make sure your new drive is set the same. I am presuming that its an
IDE drive, the settings will either be Master / Slave / Cable Select.
depending on your setup.

Hi,
The settings for all the drives on this Dell is C/S which I set it to before
installing and yes it is IDE sorry I forgot to mention that

John

Did the Combo drive and the rest of the computer work ok BEFORE you did the
firmware upgrade on the drive?..

Hi,
Yes the Combo drive did work before I installed the firmware upgrade, which
makes me wonder why I did it now

Yes.. especially being as it was a new drive..

Download the firmware for your drive from this website, if you have not
already done so.. install it, if your drive will allow..

Incorrect firmware can render a drive completely useless, so be prepared to
buy another..

Good luck.. you might want to report back on what happens..

Hello again,
It was the download from the manufactuors website which started the problem
in the first place, I'm just waiting for a reply from them. It's been
suggested I reset my NVRAM but I don't have a clue what or where it is

John

Resetting NVRAM = clearing CMOS in 'prole' terms.. this can be done by
removing the battery from the motherboard, making a cup of coffee, and then
replacing the battery, or by shorting a jumper on the board specifically to
clear CMOS.. your motherboard manual (you can download a .pdf of it) will
have info on how to clear it, and a section at the back on how to set it up
again.. all relatively simple..

A quick shuffle through the BIOS settings.. one can take the option to
either load 'optimal' (easier on the hardware) or 'performance' (pushes the
hardware more) settings, or just go through each section manually.. you
might want to make a note of the way they are now such that you can
duplicate them..

NVRAM = Non Volatile RAM

CMOS = Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor

Please state why you took the chance of a firmware upgrade?

Hi,
Just one more question before I try to reset the NVRAM, should I but the new
Combo drive back in my PC before I start

John

Probably not.. reset the CMOS first.. then re-install the drive to see if
the new refreshed BIOS sees it.. with luck, all will be well..

If it doesn't, try redoing the firmware with the link that I gave you.. you
have little to lose by it.. if no joy still, take the unit back from whence
it was bought.. you may be able to get it replaced, depending upon what you
tell the store, of course..

With a name like yours, you just must have heard the expression "well, it
seemed like a good idea at the time"..

Hi,
Thanks to all that offered ideas and suggestions, the only thing left to do
now is buy a new Combo drive. Once again thank you

So did having sex with that Little Sister who showed up at our
Fraternity house twice/week, until some of us had to scream when going
for a pee.
