Help!

My firewire device no longer detected by XP on my notebook computer all
of a sudden. I plugged the device into another computer's Firewire port
and was detected there no problem. So it seems the device is working.
I removed the Firewire device from the control panel hoping XP will
reinstall it after reboot. But that did not work either.

SO anyone know how to reinstall the Firewire Driver? I assume that is
the problem!

Thanks!

Does windows indicate that the device is working properly (Start > Control
Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager and locate your IEEE 1394
Host Controller, right click, select properties and see *device status.*)
If it is working properly it may be something like your cable or the
connections. Windows fully supports firewire and supplies drivers so I
wouldn't replace them but try rollbacking back the driver first. If
rollback doesn't work uninstall the firewire controller in device manager
(again,) reboot and let windows reinstall.

The host controller status indicate it is working fine and the cable and
device worked when I plugged into another computer's firewire port.

I did removed the IEEE 1394 Host controller, reboot, and Windows indeed
reinstalled the host adapter yet the firewire device still not deteected.

I did not perform as you suggested: to roll back the drivers. How do
you do that? I tried update t he driver, yet windows said it could not
find a better driver than the one installed.

Thanks!

Go to device manager to rollback the drivers. Also, what is the firewire
device and did it come with software?

The Firewire device is a DVD-Writer. When I first plugged it into my
notebook's firewire port, it was detected as CD-ROM/DVD-RP< devic.
After I installed the DVD writer software, it was then recognized as
DVD-writer as well. I had been using it for over 6 months and it worked
every time I plugged it in.

I was trying out some AVI to DVD software, it seems that it knocked the
whole Firewire device out colde. As most people will do: suspect the
cable or device was bad, so I plugged into my desktop machine's firewire
port, and it worked therel, I can write to thd DVD-plater there.

Since the Control panel said the IEEE 1394 host controller is ok. I
assume it is some kind of driver issue. But uninstalling the host
contorller does not soft the problem. So I guess my next choise is to
reinstall XP.

Thanks

Before reinstalling XP :( prove the controller with another firewire device
or remove any and all software you installed on the notebook for the DVD-R
(including Nero, Roxio, InterVideo or whatever) reboot and then reinstall.

will try to remove all software related with my DVD Writer as you
suggested before I reinstall XP. I agree it is a pain and will
definitely will cost me upward of 4 hours to reinstall everything back.

Sadly, I don't have any other Firewire device as it is proven to be much
more economical to buy USB device from now on even though Firewire 800
is much faster then USB2. But it reached a point that it is a moot
point due to the vast succesful penetration of USB 2 devices.
