firewire and DV camera

Win Xp (sp1). My Pc has 5 firewire ports, when i connect
a digital video camera it is not seen by the PC at all
(deos not show up in device manager). Numerous web
searches have revealed this to be a common problem (refer
www.dvboard.com - under hardware - 1394 for examples).

I have tried 2 different DV cameras, moving the firewire
card to another pci slot. removing the device in device
manager and rebooting and letting win xp reload new
device found. 3 different firewire cables and all five
ports.

can anyone advise how to get dv camera seen by winxp - i
also have another similar pc with win 98 SE on it and it
works fine - have even swapped the firewire cards between
PC's to no avail- the win xp machine just wont "see" the
cameras

I've seen this many times recently. If you find an answer
please let me know. I have customers that have Dell
computers with XP that see this a lot. A couple of them
used their XP install disc and do the "Upgrade
(recommended) option. Seems to work fine after that.

Is the camcorder turned on and in vcr mode?
