I brought up firewalls in the control panel and got a message that asked if
I wanted to start windows firewall/internet----

I checked yes and got a message that windows cannot start windows
firewall/internet service connection.

I can't tell if I have a firewall installed. thanks

Sounds like you may have another firewall, like Zone Alarm installed or a
bad install of SP2. Zone Alarm will often not allow another firewall to
start.

Thanks, I'll look to try to find it.
Harry, you might even want to check the free Zone Alarm firewall at
www.zonelabs.com because it gives both incoming and outgoing protection
which the Windows Firewall does not. You can then just turn off the Windows
firewall and enjoy a bit more protection free of cost. Good luck.
