Two problems

G

Guest

For some reason I do not have the "Run Command" on my start button. The run
command is checked in task manager, but no joy. What can i do to access the
Run Command?

The second problem is that my Windows firewall is not running and when i try
to start it, I receive a message that Windows Firewall settings cannot be
displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to
start the Windows Firewall/Internet Sharing (ICS) Service. When I click on
yes, I get the message that Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/
Internet Connection Service.

What do I do now? I am running XP with SP2, media Center Edition.

Before doing any thing try these cleaning steps:

1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:

Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:

I tried the start menu properties fix and the run command was already checked.

I un-checked it, rebooted, re-checked it and rebooted and still no joy.

Anything else I can do for this part of the problem?

As for the firewall issue, I recently received wireless broadband service,
day before yesterday, and I was told that the Belkin wireless router now
supplies my firewall. Any comments as to that?

Another issue I just discovered is that I no longer have any sounds, other
than an annoying beep when an error occurs. No sounds for games, etc.

When I go to where the settings are for my Conexant (?) mixer is supposed to
be I see a message that tells me that there is no sound mixer, but the
properties in device manager tell me that everything is working perfectly.

What now?

The Router Firewall, it is a hardware Firewall not sugffecient enough to
protect you from the Open WWW, you will need a second line of defence like an
Anti-Virus with Firewall or all in one security suite from a respectable
vendor.

Have a look in the Event Viewer for error messages(X) that can shed some
light and post it back in your next post by performing the following and also
the System File Checker (SFC) sfc /scannow:

Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from

Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.

Firstly, you didn't answer my Qs about did you run a scan and made sure the
system is clean, because there is a vulnerability issue somewhere in your
problems?.

Secondly, do you have a GPO installed or implemented on this machine?, how
many users are on this machine?.
Do you have an Anti-virus with Firewall?.
Why are you using IPV6 not IPV4 for your IP address schema?, is there is a
reason for that, like ISP implementation.
Do you have a printer/scanner/camera or any Peripherals attached to this
machine?, have a look in the Device manager and see if there is any conflict
in USB/Port or malfunctioning.

Troubleshooting steps under each error, please answer back with your exact
findings and also if you need further clarification about any thing did or
didn't make sense.

Try to start with Clean Boot and see if some of the issues will cure and
Note down which start program been causing this issue.

Firstly, you didn't answer my Qs about did you run a scan and made sure the
system is clean, because there is a vulnerability issue somewhere in your
problems?.

Soory about that.

Yes I ran the scan and in addition I also have Spybot Search, Ad-Aware ,
SpyWare Blaster and Super Anti-Spyware . All of which i ran.
Secondly, do you have a GPO installed or implemented on this machine?, how
many users are on this machine?.

I don't know what a GPO is, however I have AVG installed and running.
I have two people on this machine, myself and my wife, both with seperate
identities. My wife's is a limited user type. In addition, I have one other
identity as an Administrator and the Administrator account.
Do you have an Anti-virus with Firewall?.
Why are you using IPV6 not IPV4 for your IP address schema?, is there is a
reason for that, like ISP implementation.

As stated before, I use AVG, current version and current update.

I have no idea what IPV6 or IPV4 is, nor why any of them are being used.
Do you have a printer/scanner/camera or any Peripherals attached to this
machine?, have a look in the Device manager and see if there is any conflict
in USB/Port or malfunctioning.

No printer, scanner, etc. attached. I do have a USB wireless mouse attached
and when I want to offload pictures from my digital camera, I use a
Super-Talent, USB card reader.
Troubleshooting steps under each error, please answer back with your exact
findings and also if you need further clarification about any thing did or
didn't make sense.

I will try the trouble shooting steps and if I have problems will get back
to you.

Thank you for all your help so far.

Incidentally, what about the regedit steps where you asked me to look for
entries labeled No_run, and all I could find were Default and No_Drive?
Should I be looking for something else?

What now?

For some reason the entire post does not show up, hence the top posting.

My connection is with a Belkin Pre-N router. The signal comes to that from
my provider, Velotech.net, via wireless internet.

I can't really use a manual mouse, however there is a touchpad I can use on
the laptop.

I followed your directions regarding the properties of the wireless
connection and everything was as you stated it should be, so I didn't have to
make any changes there.

I don't use external speakers, just the built in ones on the computer, which
is a HP, Pavillion dv6000.
