Firewall for Windows Xp

I can't seem to turn on my firewall and when I go into the comtrol panel and
try going into the Windows Firewall folder I get a message that says "
Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed becasue the associated service
is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS) service?" and of course I click yes then it tries to start up
but then I'm given this following message "Windows cannot start the Windows
Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service." so what does all this
mean? is there another way around this? can someone help me set up a
firewall to protect my computer??
