firewall reports "port scan attack"

What is a "port scan attack"? My firewall reports several
times a day, "port scan attack was logged" or something
like that. Do I have to do something about this?
Does this mean an actual damage was done, or the firewall
stopped the attack of some sort??

No, sounds like your firewall is doing exactly what you
paid it to do. Many firwall programs will let you turn
the notice feature off so that you aren't constantly
being notified about these attacks. You should refer to
the support or help section for your particular firewall
program if you have further questions about specific
messages received.
