I would like to try these two programs, but don't want to lose the ability
to revert to MS's IE & OE (ver. 6 for each). Can I install and use them
without complicating my life if I want to uninstall them and return to the
latter two?

TIA
Regards...

Yes. Both applications play friendly.

Sure. But don't make them the default apps.

Just bear in mind that bookmarks you save in Firefox as well as email
you save in Thunderbird must be imported into IE and OE if you go back.
However, I don't think you'll go back.

Hell, I don't even *have* OE on my system.

Sure. Unlike Microsoft apps (which always insist on being the default
and try like crazy not to be uninstallable) both Firefox and Thunderbird
won't leave your system in a trash heap should you later decide to
remove them. If you decide to make them the default and later wish to
revert back, it is a simple process.

It takes both these programs 10 seconds to load. Not a big deal with
Firefox, but the 10 second delay is a bit much just to check your
inbox.

I used Firefox for a few months. Uninstalled Firefox and Thunderbird
and went back to I.E. with Maxthon, and Outlook Express. No problems.

Other good options, especially for testing, are Portable Firefox and
Portable Thunderbird. After using these, I'm not even sure why I would WANT
to use the install versions ...

One or two seconds here.

Quicker than IE and OE here...

Why do you use your mail program to check for mail? Much better to open it
when you know you have mail.
I use Magic Mail Monitor for just this purpose-

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2005/PL2005INTERNET.php#0441-PW

It is small, and light, and will happily run on a flash drive.
Check multiple mail boxes, preview and delete mail on the server, friends
list, and filters to deal with problems.

You are right. I do check my mail first with Magic Mail Monitor, and then
download only what I want to read and/or keep.

Thanks for your input.

Actually both Firefox and Thunderbird are portable as they are in your
system now.Found the following in Fiefox's help advanced tips part and
have used Firefox and Thunderbird from a flash drive whenever I'm on a
different computer. Have all my bookmarks, mail newsgroups etc on the fly.

Run Firefox from removable media

This advanced tip makes it possible to run Firefox from removable
media, such as a USB memory stick. This will allow you to run Firefox
with your personal settings from any computer, even those that don't
have Firefox installed. It has only been tested on Windows XP/2000. The
basic instructions are as follows:

1. Copy the Firefox application folder and your profile folder
to the removable medium. In this example we will use R:\Firefox for the
application folder and R:\FFProfile as the profile folder, assuming the
drive letter for the removable media is R:.
2. Create a simple batch file called R:\Firefox.bat with the
following line:

start \Firefox\firefox.exe -profile \FFProfile

3. Optionally, disable the disk cache to reduce the amounts of
file writes to the removable storage by entering about:config in the
address field of Firefox and set browser.cache.disk.enable to false.

The reason why a batch file is needed instead of a simple shortcut
is that a shortcut uses absolute paths, and since the actual drive
letter for the removable media may change depending on which computer it
is plugged into, the relative path used in the batch file is guaranteed
to work anywhere.

I have been using portable FireFox for a couple of months, and lately
it has been affected by a javascript that pops up a window saying
"error found" and then when i click the cancel or close icon, it pops a
www.winfixer.com window. How do I fix this? For now I've de-installed
my Firefox. (same problem with IE). Thanks for your help.

It's spyware or malware. I suggest you install some spyware killers - like
Spybot.

Soundsw like you have sspyware you need to get
Ad-aware 6.0
or
SpyBot - Search & Destroy

FYI, I run daily Adaware (with the latest cfg files), MS AntiSpyware
(used to be Giant), and crap cleaner. Every other day or so it found
ezula.topText, elite, and several cookies which I promptly remove. I
even went as far as starting in safe mode and doing that scanning. But
the browser problem is still there. Something is triggering the
javascript that pops that widnow and website, but don't know what.

Checked your hosts file?

deKay

I downloaded remover.exe and ran that software. At the end of its scan,
it says my hosts file is affected. So I looked at it, and sure enough,
the first line says 127.0.0.1 localhost, but there are at least 3
dozen lines that says 127.0.0.1 www.ad-something.. and many more. So I
deleted all but the first line. Still having the same javascript
running problem.

Yes, I do have KazaaLite installed, but this has never caused me
problem (it was installed many months ago and have not been "used/run"
for quite a while. The winfixer problem started a couple of weeks ago.
