scbs29

Hello all
I have recently upgraded Thunderbird from 2 to 3, and I much prefer 2.
How does one 'downgrade' TB 3 to 2 ? Is this possible without losing
all mail etc ?
XP, SP3
TIA

Nothing to do with Windows XP. Try the Thunderbird FAQs or repost in a
Thunderbird/Mozilla newsgroup.

If your NNTP server doesn't carry the mozilla.* newsgroups then use the one
provided by Mozilla (news.mozilla.org).

Don't proselytize for *NIX in a Windows group.

If you look at the folders that hold the Thunderbird files, you'll
realize there was stuff in there you could have backed up, before
the transition.

Any time I've been in a mood to mess around (such as running Thunderbird
on an alternate OS instead of Windows), I place the directories in question
on a flash stick, and cart them to the new OS. Then, figure out where
the profile is stored and put the files back. By doing that, I
end up with exactly the same number of "read" messages, as
before the move. I have exactly the same "state".

If you haven't backed up your profile, before the transition,
then I can't imagine how complicated it would be to put things
back. Those jokers at Mozilla, love SQLite, and for all I know,
they could have completely changed the structure in the profile.

You can always

1) Clean out all traces of 3.
2) Install 2.
3) Enter all your details again. Resubscribe to groups etc.
4) Now you've paid for your sins :)

I've had to do that a couple times over the years. It is
really a coin toss, over whether it is faster to edit
files, and remerge stuff, or just flatten and rebuild.
Your choice.

So at least find the profile and have a look. I'm still using 2
and my stuff is here. The eight character thing, is randomly
assigned at install.

I just went through this yesterday. I simply uninstalled T-bird 3.0.
Then downloaded and installed T-bird 2.23 again. Since your profile is
in a different location than the program everything was back to normal.
I did have the proper backups if needed, but, didn't have to use
them. HTH.

Two things:

1 /Uninstalling TB3 is not going to impact your emails. Unless you moved
them when you updated to TB3, they are and remain where they were before.

The location of your mail is not at all necessarily linked to the
location of your profile. I am amazed at the number of people who have
this misconception: granted, the default location is a sub folder in
your profile, but if you are smart, you want your email location to be
totally independent. This avoids any hasty deletion, and it is always a
good thing to keep programs and data separate. In other words, your mail
is where you put, and blindly accept the program's defaults is not what
I recommend.

Before you do anything, be sure to know positively where your email
files are, so that you do not end up inadvertently deleting them. But
again, uninstalling TB via Add and Remove in Control Panel will not
delete them.

2 /May I suggest you were hasty in going back to TB2? I suggest you get
acquainted with the mozilla.support.thunderbird NG and learn a few
tricks about TB3. My own first reaction was negative but following this
NG made me realize a few things, especially about smart folders, which
are not (and may be should be more) obvious.

Revisit the issue in a few weeks and I believe you will find TB3 to be a
step forward from TB2.

If your comments were directed at me, rather than the OP, you may be
surprised to know I am very familiar with Mozilla NG's and
Thunderbird. I'm afraid my computer is protected by Kaspersky and
therefore Thunderbird 3.0 is affected with a documented problem (noted
on Mozilla forums)apparently created by KIS. I tried all suggested
workarounds to no avail. Hence the uninstall.

I am not sure I was specifically answering to anyone but the OP, but I
am sorry to read you were affected by this issue I read about.
Hopefully, Kapersky will do what it takes to solve the problem.

I have not noticed your name in the NG, unless you are posting under a
different handle. Still, nice to know you follow it.

Regards
