Before trying to remove IE, you should consider that some sites don't work
with FireFox yet. Chief amongst these is the Windows Update Site.

The safest way to do it (but not the neccessarily the cleanest
way)is to go through XP "Add Remove Programs" and remove it as
an window component in XP, so you can "re-install" it whenever
you have problem.

Read what the Microsoft Knowledge Base has to say about IE on XP

In short, you may be able to conceal it, but you'll never get rid of it -
and have a working system.

Not so sure about OE. It's remarkably difficult to find any information on
this in the Knowledge Base.

And I suggest against uninstalling IE. For me, shit always happened when I
tried to do this.

I agree... unless you are experienced and patient at troubleshooting.
