Files with a .epcx extension

Y

I just started receiving e-mail files that have attachments but they are now
getting zipped with a file extension of .epcx. It appears that the only way
to open them is with a product by Microsoft call winzip. My service provider
tells me its not them that is doing this as when the file is sent to me, the
sender has not zipped the file. Does anyone know if MS is doing this or does
anyone have any knowledge as to why this is happening. I have not changed any
settings on my PC to warrant this change.

1. I did a search for ".epcx" on www.filext.com and it brought up only that
the extension might have something to do with Music Match and a note that
this extension wasn't in the database.

2. Microsoft does not own or make WinZip. That is a third-party program made
by WinZip.

3. It is enormously risky to open attachments. You should contact the sender
and ask them what they are sending.

4. You haven't said what email program you are using. If none of the above
helps, you should post your question in a newsgroup for your email program.
If it is an MS email program like Outlook or Outlook Express, you can find
a newsgroup for them here:

In addition to what Malke wrote, Microsoft does not send email with file
attachments unless there has been previous communication and you know to
expect it. Even then, all I've ever gotten has been a link to download it
from the Web or an FTP site. The fact that an email may claim to be from
Microsoft does not mean it is necessarily from Microsoft.

My e-mail program is "Incredimail". I have asked them if they are
responsible as I recently upgraded to their premium package. I have yet to
receive a response.

Microosft Office 2007 have now started to use XML extension (odcx,
xlsx etc..)

As previous stated, Microsoft never sends out updates. They send you
notice emails for updates with the web address to get the update.
Always be careful with emails that have update file in them.

WinZip is *not* a Microsoft product and has never been. WinZip is
currently owned by Corel, which is definitely not owned by MS.

Some mail systems handle attachments differently. You need do discuss with
the sender what they are doing, and what mail client and server they are
using, and what it is they are actually sending.

If you don't know the sender, delete those messages.
Does anyone know if MS is doing this

No. The file is being delivered to you as sent. It's probably being
modified by the sender's client or mail server.

If you want to check this, log into the web interface for your mail. Look
at the attachments there.

The problem is likely not on your PC, but if you don't know the senders and
haven't verified the contents, opening these could well install a problem on
your PC.

Great suggestion. I will temporally have all my e-mail stop at my ISP. I will then preview it there and then have them sent to my PC. Thanks for the suggestion>
