File Extensions

I had an email with 4 attachments 3 seem to be corrupt but one works
perfectly fine.

i opened them all up with notepad and found each of their extensions.
I then put those extensions onto the files but 3 of the 4 wouldn't work.
(the fourth one worked fine though.)
the 3 files are: a powerpoint presentation, a word document and a pdf file.
when i open each one i get error messages saying
"Powerpoint can't read the outline from C:\Documents and
Settings\******\Desktop\Equity.ppt. No text converter is installed for this
file type."

the pdf file gets the message saying
"Adobe Reader could not open 'irish.pdf' because it is either not a
supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was
sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."

and the word file wants me to choose the language 'Investment.doc' should be
written in and it is trying to make me choose Chinese (Simplified) - and it
shouldn't be that language, because i can't read it!

What would be the quickest and easiest to recover them?

TIA

If these applications say that the files are corrupted then they probably
are corrupted. The problem may lie either with the sender's PC or with your
own installation. Ask a few different people to send you some .pdf files,
and ask the sender of the unreadable message to send a few .pdf files to
some of your friends. The result will tell you *where* the problem lies. You
can then try to solve it. If the problem lies with your machine then you
should repost your question in the correct group. Do you use Outlook?
Outlook Express? Incredimail? Other? They all have their dedicated
newsgroups - use them!

thanks, and i will!

Also, i looked further down the email, and they were .zip files and none of
them were corrupted.
The email just seemed to strip the files of the extensions.
(i will try to post in the right section from now on.)

thanks for your help.

Stripping a file extension does not corrupt a file but subsequently adding
an incorrect extension will appear to make it unreadable.
