files searched for repair

Does anyone know what files Windows XP Home or Pro searches for to
determine what version is installed and if a Repair install can be
performed.

IE during the Text Mode setup after the EULA is displayed and it says
"Searching for Previous Versions of Windows"
 
You can try repair install, if you have a reason to do so. It won't hurt
anything and if it works - great, if not-then no problem. Youre back to
square one....
