files open slowly

I have two computers connected with the Home network. One with Windows XP
Home sp3 and another with Windows Vista Premium sp1. First computer has
Nod32 antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall. When I doubleclick a file in Windows
Explorer on this computer it, this file, opens very slowly. The problem does
not depend on the type of file. Sometimes I see the icon of Explorer in its
window left upper angle gets white as if the program stops to answer. The
computer is dual-core 2.8*2.8 GHz and has 1 Gb RAM.

When I take network cable off files open quickly.

No such problem with the second computer. It is dual-core 2.5*2.5 and has 4
Gb RAM. I use McAfee antivirus and Windows firewall there.
I tried to open files with antivirus or firewall disabled and it did not
help to solve the problem.
Any help will be appreciated.

I am not quite sure I understood your question right (what do you mean as C
and D?). In Windows Explorer I see My network places\entire
network\microsoft windows network\name of group\two my computers\their
shared folders.
Please be more detailed.

OK, besides quoted in my previous note "In Windows Explorer I see My network
places \entire network \microsoft windows network \name of group\two my
computers\their shared folders," let me add that I see now in opened Windows
Explorer: Desktop, My Documents, My Computer, My network places (with
Microsoft terminal services, Microsoft Windows Network, and Web Client
Network), Recycle bin.

When you doubleclick a file on the problem computer, are you trying to open a
file that's stored on that computer, or on the other computer?

Let's look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server",
and "net config workstation", from each computer, so we can diagnose the
problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

Bob means that you may have slowdowns if you have mapped network drives. Do
you have any?

to Chuck:
Sorry, I can't use your advices just now in particular because I am a
completely new user of the MS Vista (that was preinstalled on my new second
computer), even its interface, and its reactions often puzzle me. For
example, it forbids me to use the commands you recommended though I am the
only user of the computer. It'll take some time till I learn how to work
with Vista. Thank you!
