File share between Mac OS-X and WinXP?

LRW

At work we have a PC/Linux network. TCP/IP.
We have a Mac G4 with OS-X that we want to file share with.
I got the Mac on the TCP/IP connection enough where it's pingable from
a PC, but I can't "connect" to it nor vice versa.

I did do a newsgroup search, and all I could find are postings from
2002 or earlier, that recommend getting a 3rd party software for one
or the other OS.
I'm sure with OS-X being BeOS based, that there's got to be some built
in way now. Like some SMB/SAMBA, or at least able to connect with the
Linux box. But so far I can just get the Linux box to ping the Mac and
that's all.

Any suggestions, Web site, newsgroup postings, anyone can point me to
to help with this? I'd really appreciate it. =)

Thanks!
Liam

Did you turn on File Sharing in your System Preferences?

Since then a lot has happened...

Yes - Samba *is* built-in to OS X (10.2 and later). Go to System
Preferences -> File Sharing and enable Windows File Sharing. Done.
And no - OS X isn't BeOS based - it's NexT based.

To ease it up a little more, open Directory Access in the Utilities
folder and configure SMB to look in the same workgroup as the PC.
If you use the same user name and password on both machines your network
will now be transparent.

If you can't find it you probably have OS X 10.1 or even 10.0.
Go out an buy an upgrade. It's worth it.
There's no reason not to run 10.3 on a G4.

If you want to share arbitrary folders, install Sharepoints.
I think that works pre-10.2 also...
