File may be in use

Still playing around with networking and it is nearly doing well. Trouble is
that I am experimenting. I have set up a shared partition called G: on the XP.
Most of the files are jpg's just to make things simple. On the XP, I can display
(using IrfanView) the files Petrol.jpg and also the one called Nokia.jpg.
When I go to this machine(W2K Pro), I can display the Petrol.jpg but cannot do
that with the Nokia.jpg - it says something about header being wrong for
IrfanView.

I was going to copy both files to this computer today and do a dos CMP on the
files which have been transferred directly to this computer and the one from the
net.

I cannot copy the Nokia.jpg across the net to the W2k as the file might be in
use.

The Nokia started life in the W2K as a Photoshop file - it was transferred to
the XP via an old net link called Transfer on the W2K F: drive.

Interestingly the Nokia will copy to my thumb drive from XP shared drive and
then display that on the W2K.

A subfolder on the XP (shared partition) called Download shows on the net but
does not open up - despite the fact that I have set the net up to look at folder
and subfolders.

I do not need to have things running - I am just displeased that all is not well
:)

Hello nesredep,

You say you shared a drive. Did you try sharing a folder with everyone full
control (only for testing) with the same result? Also putting both workstations
in the same workgroup and create a username with the same password on both?
Did you check under Computer management>system tools>shard folders>sessions
who is accessing the file?

Best regards

This morning before looking here I went to comand line and tried attrib and that
was fine. I then checked G: drive again and this time set it to accept everyone
and it now works. Now I have to see if I can control it so only I can get to the
files. Incidentally every time I get to adjust something to do with share I find
that the share is G$ and not GDisk as I named it. I know that cannot be the
fault but why do I have it to correct every time? as I hit apply when I make the
change.

AS regards the Computer management, I am a little worried as it tell me that all
the partitions and folders on my computer are shared which is not the fact. When
I tried to undo the share for C: drive, it said something about the share was
created for administrative purposes and did I want to change that - something
else to worry about :)

Hello nesredep,

Every disk in a pc is automatically shared, as a so called administrative
share, with "drive letter$" (Except VISTA). Even if you share it with different
names or delete it it appears again after reboot with "drive letter$"
So don't share the drive again, create a folder and set the share permissions
for the folder and then you can configure security for the folder access.

Best regards
