New to networking - cannot connect 2k to xp Pro

I need to connect 2 computers. One is W2k pro and the other is xp pro. When looking at the
xp, I easily find a shared folder on the W2K and can copy and delete files on the W2K.

However I need to store large amount of data (photo) on the XP where there is a large
storage capacity (recently installed) . I have given the two computers a common group name
and the computers are also given names of the people supposed to be using them.

On the 2K I see a dialog for Add Network Place Wizard, it tells me it is ready to connect
to the proper name with the double backslash for the group and the single for the name
(\\Acton\Winifred). It invites me to click Finish and then gives another dialog that the
place could not be added because the path was not found.

The two computers are connected via cables to a d-link router and as I readily connect the
XP to read from the 2K (folder on partition F), I cannot see why I cannot make connection
the other way - we should be able to make the electrons fly both ways along the cable?

You need to adjust "Simple File Sharing" on the WinXP PC - see here:

I have tried everything in that URL. I have finally managed to get the workgroup
called 'ACTON' to show 'Borge' and 'Winifred' as the two computers in the group.
Whenever I click on Winifred, there is a long pause and a dialog called
"My Network Places", saying

****************************************
\\Winifred not accessible
The Network path not found
***************************************
I can of course still manage to transfer files to a subfolder on
\\Borge\Transfer . Indeed I have a shortcut on the XP which will bring W2K
transfer into view on the XP.

I can then read and copy/transfer these files to the Drive I need to use on the
XP.
However that seems a clumsy way of doing things and I am sure there must be a
better way.

It's a little hard to give you precise instructions because you
sometimes refer to your PCs by name and sometimes by their
OS (Win2000/WinX). Knowing which PC runs what and
which PC can access which other PC would be helpful.

Run gpedit.msc on your WinXP PCs, then follow this path:
Computer configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings /
Local Settings / Securit options / Network Access:
Sharing and Security model for local accounts:

What is this setting? It should be "Classic - local users".

Yes I agree - however that is not the only stupid thing I have done.

I ran the W2k for some 5 years or more and asked my wife to become interested in
computers - so I built her one and put XP Pro on that.
I did not realise that XP has a firewall so when I came from W2K McAfee to
ZoneAlarm, I also fitted that to the XP.

I had a good night sleep and woke up fully this morning to realize that
ZoneAlarm on the XP was superflous and therefore probably be the cause of the
trouble - disabled it and have now done a transfer from W2K to XP.

However all is not lost, I am going to find out how much there is in .msc's as
that seems to be what I should have used and it could be useful for the future -
whatever is left :)
Incidentally I now have 2 computers as my wife lost interest. They are well
protected with router, firewalls and virus scanners :)
Run gpedit.msc on your WinXP PCs, then follow this path:
Computer configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings /
Local Settings / Securit options / Network Access:
Sharing and Security model for local accounts:

The result was
Local users authenticate themselves
and it is still so when I enable ZA
What is this setting? It should be "Classic - local users".
Thanks. Where on earth do you get your patience from
