File incons reset to a generic icon

G

Guest

My documents used to be displayed in folders, and on the desktop, with the
icon of the program that created them, such as Word or Excel. Now they all
have the same generic icon. What caused this and how do I get the proper
program icons back?

Thanks

Try refreshing the icon cache. In the Display Properties dialog:

'Appearance' tab -> 'Advanced' button -> Item: 'Icon'

spin the size down one pixel, 'OK', 'Apply'

Then repeat setting the size back to its original value.

Keith,

Thanks for the idea, however it did not solve the problem. I still have
generic icons on the desktop and in Windows Explorer.

Go into your display properties/settings. Change the color quality from 32 to
16 bit. Follow it through then go back in and reset it to 32 bit. See if that
does the trick.

Hey Anyone,

An update on this problem. I right click one of the icons on my desktop that

Try deleting the IconCache.db file. Click Start/Run and type:

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\

Select the file named "IconCache.db" (hidden file) and delete it.

BTW, are you able to open those documents?

Running out of ideas, Brent, as this is seen for more than one file type.
See if creating a new profile helps. If not, try a System Restore:

Have you verified that these are still valid office documents & have not been corrupted by malware?

Also, check the default icon assignments & verify the icons are available:

1) Open regedit and navigate to:

"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xls"

and check the '(default)' value in the right-hand pane. Mine is 'Excel.Sheet.8', yours may vary
based on version.

2) Navigate to:

"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.8\DefaultIcon"

and check the '(default)' value. Mine is:

"C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{00010409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}\xlicons.exe,1"

3) Verify that the path & file exist. 'Installer' is a hidden folder, so Folder view options must
be set to BOTH 'Show Hidden Files & Folders' AND 'Hide Protected O.S. Files' must be cleared.

If you find the corruption is in the registry or files & folders are missing, I would suggest a
repair install of MS Office.

DefaultIcon should be a subkey of Excel.Sheet.8, not a value in the right-hand pane.

"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.8\DefaultIcon"

and have a '(default)' value that is a path to the Icon.

If you don't have that, try 'Detect & Repair' from the Help menu in your Office Programs.

Hey Anyone,

An update on this problem. I right click one of the icons on my desktop that
has been reset to a generic icon (the file is an Excel workbook) then
properties > Summary and in the Title window I find: "ESPN.com - San
Francisco Giants - Clubhouse", and in the Author window; "thirty-eight". What
the H___ is this? All MS Office documents and program icons have been reset,
as well as a variety of other programs not from MS.

Ramesh,

Thank you as well for the tip, however Tweak did not repair the problem
either. Could this have been caused by installing Bluebeam Lite 401 (PDF
maker)?

:

Brent,

Try repairing the icons using Tweak UI.

TweakUI v2.00 for Windows XP/XP MCE [564 KB].
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

TweakUI v2.10 for Windows XP SP1/XP MCE/2003 [147 KB].

otisdog,

Thank you for the idea as well, but as before this did not reset the icons.

:

Go into your display properties/settings. Change the color quality from 32
to
16 bit. Follow it through then go back in and reset it to 32 bit. See if
that
does the trick.

Keith,

Thanks for the idea, however it did not solve the problem. I still have
generic icons on the desktop and in Windows Explorer.

:

Try refreshing the icon cache. In the Display Properties dialog:

'Appearance' tab -> 'Advanced' button -> Item: 'Icon'

spin the size down one pixel, 'OK', 'Apply'

Then repeat setting the size back to its original value.

My documents used to be displayed in folders, and on the desktop,
with the
icon of the program that created them, such as Word or Excel. Now
they all
have the same generic icon. What caused this and how do I get the
proper
program icons back?

Thanks
