Icons on Desktop - Changed to Generic

G

Guest

The icons on my desktop for specific websites are now all the same generic
graphic image. - - I tried deleting the iconcache.db file as suggested in a
previous posting in this newsgroup but it did not work - still have the
generic icons. I even tried creating a new icon, and the same thing happens
- only generic. In addtion, the iconcache.db file is gone all together now -
I guess it did not rebuild?? Thanks.

Plus, when I launch the web site (and all others with desktop icons), the
web page comes up in a reduced size (about 1/4th of a full page), even though
the last time I closed the page, I had it maximized. - - I've noted this
point in addition in case they are related. Thanks.

iconcache.db has nothing to do with it.

Favicons are those fancy icons from websites. Unless you create copies
elsewhere, they are stored in your Temporary Internet Files folder (cache).
The favicons were deleted when you emptied your Temporary Internet Files
folder.

<quote>
I used to see favicons, but now they've all disappeared. What happened?

Favicons are cached similarly to html documents. When they are deleted from
the cache, they revert to the standard IE icon. If you want to prevent the
icon from disappearing:

1. Create a local directory (e.g., c:\favicons)
2. Copy the desired favicon into the directory created above.
3. Right click the mouse over the favorite/bookmark and select properties.
4. Enter the path (or use the 'browse' feature) to the favicon you want for
that bookmark.

Another temporary solution is to hold down the mouse button while holding
shift over the default IE icon in the address bar and then let go of the
mouse button anywhere in the address bar. This seems to 'update' the
favicon.

These Icons are stored in >>

The contents of these files get deleted. Icons revert back to the generic
ugly IE e.

IE | Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Settings button | View Files
button | Scroll down to whatever *.ico files you want to keep | Left click
favicon.ico | Drag to Desktop | Rename to whatever | Store in a folder such
as >> C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\My Documents\ICONS

Open Favorites | Right click whatever item | Properties | Change Icon |
button | Browse button | Click: My Documents or wherever *.ico are stored |
Click whatever *.ico | Open button | Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK
Repeat as necessary.

If you move any *.ico files after customizing your shortcut/favorite, the
icon will revert back to the blue e.

Thanks Wesley - I really appreciate the input. I think I will live with the
generic icons given what you said. Thanks Again.

I collect favicons, whatever strikes my fancy. I store them in C:\Documents
and Settings\Wesley Vogel\My Documents\ICONS. It is no big deal to
customize the shortcuts. As with anything you get better with a little
practice. When I want to customize an Internet Shortcut I right click the
file, click Properties, on the Web Document tab click the Change Icon
button, click the Browse button, navigate to my ICONS folder and select
whatever icon. Ain't no thang. :)

I have been collecting those puppies for a long time. I may have to get a
stamp book to put them in. Or one of those book deals like for the "State"
quarters. :-D

Now, if only it did something useful!

It slices, it dices, it even cuts julienne fries. We have to work on that
so we can have some late night Rock-O-Matic infomercials. :) Operators
are standing by. Then maybe Weird Al Yankovic will write a song about it.

You should have heard me laughing out loud as I was typing that. LOL It
takes very little to keep me amused.

At least the neighbors ought to be happy. Usually when working on my
computer I swear at a pretty good volume.

I always picture one of the neighbors walking by outside with a visitor
hearing me swearing.

And the visitor says, "My gracious, what's that?"

"Oh, that's just Wes working on his computer.
