File in Conflict-- Unmatched?

When I click on the list to show files in conflict, a
list of a dozen files pulls up. All are FP2003 generated
files. .xml and .gif files. I didn't directly put any of
them on my web pages. They appear to be related to MS
generated files for creating lines and boxes.

Anyway, the status on the remote site window
says, "Unmatched." Well, if they are unmatched to
anything I have on my hardrive, I should be able to just
delete them off the remote web site and that should solve
the problem. So I did. And they deleted fine. But...

when I publish my site again, for some reason these same
unmatched mystery files are republished on the remote
site and again I get the same conflicted files residing
on the server.

What is going on? Thanks for any help.

If you use Word/Shape art those files are generated by FP as thicket files (associated to the word/shape art)
Depending on your local vs. the server OS settings, the thicket files may be visible (by default in FP 2003 they are not)
Depending on which site they show up in you can try opening it, and edit the word/shape art to see if it updates them and publishes
them back to the other site

Open the remote site in FrontPage and use Tools->Page Options
On the Authoring tab uncheck the box "Down level image file"

IMO doing this is a bad idea, since FP word art and drawings can only be
seen in IE5.5 and later running on Windows PCs, the downlevel images enable
other browsers to see a representation of the art instead.

IMO, Word Art and FP drawings should be avoided for the above reason - use a
graphics editor to convert the art into gifs or jpgs and use "real" images
instead.
