File folders freeze, won't respond

My file folders are freezing on me and won't respond. I can't get anything to
open from them at all when this happens. I keep getting an error message that
there is a problem in Dr. Watson post mortem de-bugger and that the program
must close! Plus, each time I click on a sub-folder I get sent to "Search"
instead of opening the folder. Any suggestions? I have run spy-ware and
ad-ware programs and even tried a hijacker search and destroy type of
program. Nothing changes. I have run virus scan with no results , I even used
system restore...still nothing. HELP!!!
