We have just bought a new computer running XP Home. After we loaded our data
files onto the hard rive, we tried opening them. XP does not recognize the
file ext. for all the basics, word, excel, etc.

When we create a new file in word or excel and save it to to the hard drive,
then try to open it up by clicking on the file icon in the folder, windows
will ask us to indicate a file type.

Anyone out their able to help with this? Its a new on on us.

Thanks

Is MS Word or Excel installed on the new machine?

Are these newly created files being created on the new machine in Word/Excel or
another machine and then transfered to the new machine?
Anyone out their able to help with this? Its a new on us.

As the previous poster said, it sounds like you haven't installed all of the
programs. Out of the box, XP does not know anything about the file
extensions for word, excel, or any other program that is not part of XP.

If you have installed these programs then the most likely thing is that the
file associations are incorrect or missing. Help & Support tells how to
create, modify, and remove file extensions.
