I want to add a new Hard Drive to my Windows XP computer, how can I
copy all the files and programs from the old rive to the new drive and
make the new drive the boot drive ?

Thank you for your help.

Tony

install your hard drive and setup mirror sets using disk management.
===> right click on mycomputer and select manage, then browse to disk
management.

Use XXClone

XP does not support software RAID 1. Even if it did this wouldn't make a
bootable drive.

Most retail drives come with software to do this. If the drive doesn't come
with software you can download it from the manufacturer's web site. IF you
have a Dell, HP/Compaq, or other OEM computer that uses a hidden recovery
partition this software may not work. In that case you would have to use a
3rd party application like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost. Bootitng also
gets mentioned a lot but I have never used it so I can't personally
recommend it.

You want to make a clone of the partition containing the
OS onto a new hard drive. The easiest way to do this is
to download a free 30-day trial copy of Casper XP from
www.FSSdev.com/products/casperxp/ . The way to do
this while knowing the least about what you're doing is
to put in the 2nd HD jumpered as Slave (assuming that
your old HD is jumpered as Master). Then run Casper
XP to clone the "parent" OS partition to the new HD.
If you plan to keep the old OS around, disconnect the
old HD before you boot up the new clone for the 1st
time. Then restart the computer. The clone should
boot up and behave exactly as its "parent" OS.
Then shut down, the computer, reverse the jumpers
on the 2 HDs (or reverse the cable position of the 2 HDs
if you're using Cable Select). Therafter, when you start the
computer, the clone will boot up, calling its own partition
whatever the "parent" calls its own partition now, and it
will name the partition containing the "parent" OS by
whatever letter is available - probably "D:". You can
keep the old files on the old HD, or you can reformat
the old HD using Disk Management.

If you don't plan to keep the old HD around, just disconnect
it and the clone will boot each time. You can re-jumper it
to Master if you want, but if it's the only HD, it really
doesn't matter whether it's Master of Slave. What's
important is that a lone device be put at the end connector
on the IDE cable (assuming PATA HDs) and not at the
middle connector.

Well,
I've tried many programs to make backup and copy/'clone HDD'
But my favourite is Acronis True Image.
It has clone tool, wich allows you to transfer everything from one HDD
to anoher. And it doesn't take a long time.
Additionally I use its backup option every day due to build-in
scheduler.

I used TrueImage 9.1 to do exactly what the OP wants to do, and I've
spent the last 30 hours digging myself out of the mess I got into with
TrueImage. When I complained, folks told me that I should have read the
Acronis forums before using it. Were they ever right! So please read
the forum before using this piece of [fill in the blank]:

I use Casper XP by Future Systems to periodically clone my C: drive to
a second D: drive....

It actually saved me once when my C: drive failed... all I had to do
was physically interchange the drives...

FWIW....
