File Extension

I use to be able to change a file's name without getting this message:

"If you change a file name extension the file may become unusable. Are
you sure you want to change it?"

I would then have to keep the bits at the end untouched or retype that
otherwise I won't be able to use the file anymore. (e.g: the .jpg for
picture files)

I recently just downloaded Dirsize.dll and run the programme. Could
that be the cause?

Is it possible to set it back to my original setting where I don't have
to worry about the file extension when changing my file names?

Thanks for the help. :)

You might want to try the following:
Go to Control Panel and double click on Folder Options.
Click on the View tab.
Make sure there's a check mark in the box next to "Hide
extensions for known file types".

You *always* have to worry about the file extension when you change
the name of a file. The extension is what is used to identify the
specific type of file.

You can use the option to "hide file extensions for known file types"
but that can cause as many or more problems than it solves if you are
renaming files.

Why is it so difficult to remember to type .jpg (or whatever the
correct extension is) at the end of the new name?

Good luck

I would recommend against hiding file extensions. Some viruses (virii???)
ome as attachments with a name like

FantasticPicture.jpg.exe

If you "hide" known extensions you will only see the name as
"FantasticPicture.jpg".

While I am preaching, my father-in-law got whacked with an attachment with a
name like

FantasticPicture.jpg
..exe

Note the many blanks between ".jpg" and ".exe". He didn't.

Dirsize.dll does not cause the problem you describe.

Hope this helps.

Personal opinion of mine: Displaying file extensions is an
ineffective security measure.

I've found that most home users are unable to identify an
unsafe file simply based upon its file extension. And if you
try to show them how, they're not interested. It's tough enough
getting them to keep their antivirus program up-to-date.
