File encryption Software

Hi. Can someone advise me as to the cheapest, safest, and most
effective file encryption software for my laptop running Windows
XP SP2? My system is a Dell laptop with 1024 megabytes of
RAM and a 100 GB hard drive. Thank you.

There have been a number of important laptops stolen recently
but their data were protected by file encryption. My laptop and
its data is only important to me, but I don't want others to access
my private and business data. I own a small floral shop so I
have no access to an IT professional for advice.

Can anyone explain how I'd recover if the encryption software
proves buggy or if an electrical storm knocks my laptop down?
Would I lose access to my data? I'm afraid of encryption software
but feel compelled to use it while on vacation and business trips.

Thank you.

I use the following software:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1654746,00.asp?rsDis=*Download_ShellCrypt*-Page001-33519

It was free when it came out but now they want a nominal fee. Works
extremely well and fast, just don't forget the password you use when you set
it up.
To make sure you always have your data no matter what happens to your
laptop, you copy your document files to an external drive and you Never have
this external drive plugged in, except when copying documents from your hard
drive. This way, if your laptop goes down or is stolen you can read your
documents by connecting your external drive to any other computer. External
drive no longer expensive. Check for one from LaCie, very reliable.

Dont trust a pc to contain sensitive data. It can be hacked in less than
an hour, no matter what you use.

Hi Raquel,

I have been using TrueCrypt (which is freeware) for more than a year
and it works fine. I have not loss any data and the encryption is
VERY good.

Because you create 'volumes', all you need to do is backup your
volumes regularly. I backup my volumes to an external hard disk
every day.

The one thing that you must keep in mind when using any encryption
is that the strength of the password effects how easily the
encryption can be broken. If you use words or names, then a brute
force attack will eventually work if the hacker wants to spend the
computer time/resources on the brute force assault. I use a 32 to 64
character password, and I make sure to include non-alpha/numeric
characters in it.

Ciao . . . C.Joseph
