File corruption

I am running Windows XP Pro with SP2 on a P4 machine with 640 MB RAM. About 1
month back I upgraded my RAM (from 256 to 640 MB) and also bought a new hard
disk of 160 GB capacity (earlier I had a disk of 40GB).
For the past 2-3 days I am battling with a very wierd problem. Whenver I
download some zip/rar file from my LAN and start the WinZip application it
says that the file is corrupt. Similar thing has started happening in many of
the exe's (including Microsoft Outlook 2003).
In case of exes that I download from network, windows only allows me to run
it once, after which it says that the file has become corrupt.
I have tried formatting the whole drive and reinstalling the OS afresh (on
the 160GB HDD). Check for virus etc. CHKDSK ---done (no problems there)

Could anyone have any idea why such a wierd error is cropping up?? Is there
some problem with the file system (NTFS in my case)??
Any suggestions/pointers would be very helpful as I am not even able to work
on my PC.

Best Wishes,
-Aayush

Have you run a full anti-virus scan with up to date definitions?

Whenever you have "wierd" problems with large file downloads, it could be a problem with your router or network adapter. However, when you add to that a problem with large applications and large local files, you may well be looking at a bad memory module. They can and do go bad.

Memtest86 - A Stand-alone Memory Diagnostic:

The floppy version is just fine. It takes a while to get through an entire pass, but since your memory is new; it is high on the list of suspects at this point.

Good Luck,

That sounds like you had 2x128 and removed one and added 512 or 2x256.
Such combinations always run risk of a mismatch, and if you have
trouble, first thing to try is to remove the odd one (the second 128)
and try the 512 on its own

Thanks Carl,
The 512MB RAM was problematic. I got it replaced and now the system is
working fine.
Thanks for the tip
That's why we must not fully rely on Word autocorrect ;-) Some "weird"
things may happen.

LOL! Glad to hear things are working well and NO auto-correct or spell-checking for me!
