File Associaton last straw!

Ok, I'm running XP with the latest SP packs and I have AVG Virus scanner
updated and such. Now, whenever I try and open any .exe program I get the
error message : "This file does not have a program associated with it for
performin this action". I can use the run command and run the programs but it
won't save my selections and the box to click to always use this file to open
this progams remains greyed. Lookin at some other posts I tried running the
Regsvr32 but I get these 2 error messages : "Regsvr32.exe was loaded but the
dllregisterserver entry point was not found" and " "Regsvr32.exe does not
appear to be a .dll or .ocx file" I tried d/l the XP fix that seems to be
linked to in every file associaton problem but when I try to run it thru
Winzip I get an File Association error mesage but not with Winzip but with
Explorer.exe. So, is there any possible way to fix this mess or am I looking
at having to do a clean re-install to fix everything.

Doesn't your machine have restore points?
Read the help files included as part of the Windows installation to find out
more. Go back to when it was running correctly- that's what it is there for.
