File associations

I have just recenlty installed nero 7 ultra. Since this install .dat files
are associated with nero and classified as a windows movie file (video cd
movie). When I right click on file and click properties, file description is
"video cd movie" and until I changed it using tools/folder options/file types
...... nero wanted to attempt to play it. Although now notepad is associated
with it, the file still has the "video cd movie" Icon. I havent yet looked
to see if there were others but this is whacked....... any ideas? Also, isnt
there a right click somewhere to change file icons? This drives me nutz and
want the notepad icon back where it belongs.

I seem to remember that during the Nero install, a window comes up asking which files you
want associated with various Nero applets. You can opt to deselect all, and only select
the ones that you want. You might have missed that. Anyway, the quickest way to get make
things right. Go to Control Panel Add or Remove Programs, and uninstall all of Nero.
Then reboot your system. Then click Start button/All Programs/Accessories/System
Tools/System Restore. When System Restore opens, opt for Restore My Computer to an
Earlier Time and click the NEXT button. When the next window opens click on a BOLD font
calendar date just prior to when you installed Nero. (The dates in BOLD font are the ones
that contain Restore Points). Then finish the wizard. If System Restore is successful,
your associations will be as they were before the Nero install. Then you can carefully
reinstall Nero, watching out for the file associations window, and remove the checkmarks
to the left of any associations that you DO NOT want Nero to claim...

To just change the Icon, open any folder, click "Tools", "Folder Options", "File Types" tab.
Scroll down the list to DAT and click it once to highlight it. Click the "Advanced" button, and
click the "Change Icon" button. Select the Notepad Icon from the
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll" file.

Not all file types have the "Advanced" button. Some have "Restore" instead.
Which and why?
