Problem with notepad file association

S

Steve

The Notepad shortcut on my desktop now shows up as the generic console icon.

Also whenever I try to open a .txt file by double-clicking it in explorer
nothing happens.Even if I right click the filename and select to open it
with Notepad nothing happens. Same thing if I choose Open With ... and
choose Notepad. I also thought it might repair the association if I ticked
"Always use the selected program to open files of this kind", but again no
effect.

I can start Notepad by double clicking its shortcut on the desktop and it
seems to work OK.

Any idea how to repair the file association and get the icon to change back?

Thanks

HI buddy ,

i also faced the same problem and found the following
solution , try it hope works for u .

Solution :-
Step 1: Open "%SystemRoot%\system32\" folder ( ie.
'C:\windows\system32\' in general).
Step 2: Now look for "notepad.exe" , here u will find that
it is a small file ( approx. 3kB) which is actually a link
to actual notepad application , whose name has been changed
to some other file name ("notpad.exe" on my system)
Step 3: Now delete this link file and rename the actual
notepad program to "notepad.exe" , everything will be fine
now.

The reason why this prob occurs i dont know , but solution
i get ,But will search the reason also and let u know.
