Perfromance Lbrary files in Temp Folder

I have a large number of Perflib_Perfdata_*.dat files in my Temp folder.
Each is identified as 16 KB and as a movie CD. When I try to open a file it
opens with Nero 7 Essentials Showtime. What gives? Supposedly, this is
typically in the Registry. I wouldn't expect error messages to show up as
Videos.

They are data collection modules for Performance Monitor. The
files are known to become orphaned in some situations, such as
an abnormal shutdown. Sometimes you can simply open up the
Performance monitor ( Perfmon.Msc ) and exiting the utility will
clean up the data collection files.

The reason that they appear to be videos and open with Nero ES is
because when Nero ES was installed, it apparently associated *.dat files
with itself. The "dat" file extension is pretty common, so you might
want to open Windows Explorer, go to Tools > Folder Options > File types
and delete the entry for the DAT extension. Then when you try to open a
*.dat file, you'll get the "open with which application" dialog. Or you
could just re-associate DAT with notepad (of course, if you have a *.dat
file that really is some sort of video from Nero ES, you won't see it in
Notepad!).

Any and all files in any/all temp/tmp folders can be deleted safely.
