Hammer Toe

Recently I installed Microsoft Office 2000.

Up until that time, my Windows File Assocations were set so that
'.CSV' files opened with/in an editor knowm as 'UltraEdit'.

Not only did UltraEdit correctly OPEN such files when I double-clicked
them BUT in Windows Explorer lists, etc., the '.CSV' files ICON showed
them 'visually' to belong to/be associated with UltraEdit.

After installing Office 2000, double-clicking '.CSV' files resulted in
them being opened in Microsoft Excel which I didn't want so I went in
and changed the association 'back' so that UltraEdit now (and AGAIN)
CORRECTLY OPENS THEM when I double-click.

HOWEVER, (the) Microsoft Excel (ICON) STILL shows up as the
'Associated Opening Program' icon in Windows Explorer, Search Results
lists, etc.

Anyone know how I can fix this????

TIA!

Folder Options> File Types. Scroll down to the .CSV file extension.
Highlight it and click the Advanced button. On the next screen that
appears, there is a "Change Icon" section. Use the buttons here to locate
the .EXE file for UltraEdit. After that is done, a pictorial list of the
icons stored in this .EXE file will be displayed. Choose the icon that you
want. Start clicking OK to accept the change and to back out of these
screens.

Hmmm.. That's what I thought I USED to be able to do it.

However, when I try to 'go that route' NOW, as soon as I SELECT the
..CSV extension, the 'Change/ADVANCED' section of that window ITSELF
changes to 'Change/RESTORE' and there seems to be no way to 'get to'
the Advanced 'dialog to DO what you suggest.

I tried 'restoring' and starting from scratch a couple of time but I
always seem to wind up unable to get to that 'Advanced' option, always
get back to (the only option being) RESTORE.

Any further ideas?

This came up last week when someone was working on editing their *.WAV file
type. If I remember correctly, you need to backtrack to get this sorted.
Use the Restore button. Then make your changes to the association and to
the icon.

Why do you people perserve with this delibrately crippled, lying, dialog that shows about 10% of what can be there.

Excel adds a default value to .csv to link it with Excel. Remove that one value and it's back to normal using it's Percieved type of Text.

I don't know what your editor does (I've not seen any current editor that is better than Notepad). But removing this will open them in Notepad all else being the same.

Delete the default value here
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.csv

You may need to rebuild the icon cache to see changes (because you are not a program can't tell windows the icons have changed).

To refresh the icons in the system change the size of icons in Start - Control Panel - Display - Appearance - Advanced, click apply then change the size back.

If you must use silly dialogs then use this one.

Still a very limited program but allows 30% access rather than 10% access to file associations but isn't delibrately crippled. I doubt this program can help you in this situation but in others it can where the inbuilt one rarely can do anything useful.

I wonder how many hours, all up, have people wasted on this pathetic thing, that is even more pathetic than 95's one. (though I acknowledge the restore function - an undo for using Open With).

Mucho many, David. However, in lieu of restore I sent 'em straight to the
registry as you advised. Restore is over amplified and not necessary in
most cases.
