It's definately *better but not nearly as smooth as other games. I just
get a lot of stuttering in most resolutions with some stuff disabled and
with the rename EXE trick.

So maybe I will wait for the new ATI driver or get more RAM. Whenever
there are a few guys on screen at one time, the hard disk start chirping
away.

This is definitely a game that needs a gig of RAM. Theres a 5.12 beta driver
on the net that does improve performance in FEAR but that may well be
because it sorts the AI bug in the older drivers.
But, also, I have another computer with a 6800 but no DVD drive. Is there
a way to move the game onto that system?

Its pretty easy to take a DVD drive out and hook it up to another PC
temporarily just to install one game. Dont bother patching it - just get a
crack for version 1.0 from www.gamecopyworld.com - dont worry about
multiplayer and ignore the "do you want to update" messages you get every
time you load the game. (Bloody annoying is that) Enjoy the single player
game on a 6800.

That's definitely a system RAM issue. When the PC runs out of memory it
uses the hard drive as virtual memory, which is much slower than
physical memory.

Not sure, probably not w/o a lot of trial and error. Would be easier to
install a DVD drive.

Do you know what's the cheapest external DVD drive? I'd hate to uninstall
and install (and then re-install) my DVD drive just for this game.

It is still running terrible, so I figure I shoudl try the 6800.

Hmm, I just thought of something; maybe I should just swap vid cards.

Not unless you are real good at removing drivers i wouldn't do that.
And if you had a Nvidia card in this current machine, and you didn't get a
good removal of those driver before adding the ATI, this could explain some
of your problems.

Externals usually perform poorly and I wouldn't recommend any of them.
I would just buy an internal for $30 and replace the CD drive that's in
there. Or for $40-50 you could buy a DVD-RW.

You could, but like JAD mentioned, if going from Geforce to ATI you'll
want to be sure and clean out the drivers good. They are utilities for
this, but I don't have any links off hand.

Are your PCs networked? Just share the DVD on the one and connect from the
other. I share a single DVD reader amongst several PCs.

That is so stupidly simple - but I've never thought of it... Bound to be a
reason for needing it in the future so thanks. ;-)

In the continuing saga (thanks Kroagnon and others) I have FEAR installed on
my second computer, but it says it needs the DVD, even though the DVD is
attached on the first PC. So I guess now I need that No CD crack, but on my
network a filter blocks anything like that (long story). Does anyone have
the file somewhere ona safer site?

Yup, it works smooth with the 6800 and 1GB of RAM. Now, I think I'll get
that 512 chip for my other system and see if there's any difference.
