IM helping a friend put windows XP on. She has windows ME
now. Can you advise me on how to do a clean install of
XP. please explain each step of the way because it's like
the blind leading the blind between the both of us.
Thank You
Frank

Put in the xp cd. Reboot the machine(or turn it on if its off). It should
boot to the xp cd, follow the on screen instructions carefully. Make sure
you choose to format during the xp setup.
If it does not boot to the cd, then you have to go into the computers bios
and set the cdrom to be the first boot device. Since there are many ways to
do this, consult the computer manual ti get into the bios.

Boot the PC with the CD Drive as the Primary boot drive and the XP CD in the
unit. Then, answer the question and when you come to the Partition install
screen, press D to delete the ME partition. Then, create the new XP
partition and follow the directions.

To all of you who helped me I want to say thank you for
your time and help .It is much appreciated.

Greetings --

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered
the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of
the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware
(particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still
support Win9x.

Normally you start by booting the XP CD; but you can, and it may be
easier, to start by having the ME system running, putting in the XP CD
and letting it auto-run. In that take Install, at the next page change
Upgrade to New Install.

Either way, When it asks where to put the system, hit ESC and there you
can select the present partition, and Delete it to make a new one that
is clean, to be formatted as the next stage.

But before doing a clean install, I would strongly suggest you start
with an upgrade one - which will probably work fine and save
reinstalling software, abd having to restore data from backup (though
you should always have a backup just in case). Read Gary Woodruff's
article on upgrading to XP at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm
