Many users don't realize that faxing is a function that can only use analog
phone lines and analog fax modems. Accordingly, no fax software will
function with cable modems or DSL lines. With some DSL connections you can
obtain a DSL line filter suitable for connecting a standard analog voice
line to the DSL line and can then connect an analog fax modem to that line.
If you have no analog modem or phone line, you will need to use a fee based
Internet Fax Service. Several are listed here: http://www.savetz.com/fax/
You can subscribe to a fax service. You send them the fax and the target
address(es) and they send it for you. It is a commercial service so you
will have to pay a charge.
If you have a fax/modem installed or an external fax/modem or all-in-one
(printer/copier/fax), you can connect that device to a Telco (telephone
company) line or possibly through a line filter to an ADSL line. If so,
you can set up XP's faxing software or 3rd party software to provide
sending and receiving faxes. Now you can use the DSL for internet as
usual and use the other setup for faxes.
Otherwise, an ADSL or DSL or cable modem cannot be used to send faxes.

: I on dsl instead of my dial-modem. What do I have to do
: to make it work on dsl?
I have a phone line with DSL and I also have a seperate fax modem that is connected to the same line through a filter. The DSL is always on, and I am able to send and recieve faxes just fine.
Just to clarify, I don't use the DSL modem to send and recieve the faxes.
