Faxing from Computer and Fax machine

Is it possible to use both WinXP and and external Fax machine at the same
time? I'd like to be able to send (if i created the fax) and receive faxes,
store them on the computer and only print them if needed. I still need the
capability to send documents throughthe fax machine itself. I have a
dedicted phone line, if this helps. any pointers, or information sources
sure would be appreciated.

TIA

Just for starters they can not use the same phone line at same time.
They must take turns. Then which will answer for incoming? The built-in
XP fax service works but is not very good. So third part software or
internet fax service may be considered. Sorry not much help.

I understand about the line sharing. What I'm trying to accomplish is to
have all incoming faxes go to the computer for printing later. How can I
make sure the fax doesn't answer immediatly and start printing. My thinking
is to shut the fax off, and turn it on when needed. does this sound
plausible?

It would seem easier to just turn off the printer. Then just print/delete
from the printer status window prior to turning it on again.

OK. My fax machine can be set to answer up to 8 rings. Can I set my
computer to answer at say, 4 rings. This way if my computer off, the fax
will then answer. Does certain software have this capability, I'm looking
at Winfax Pro, for example? Does Windows native fax application do this?
I'm sure I can Sys restore if things get too bad, but.....you never know. I
really want to do my homework before starting this procedure, I'd be in a
world of hurt if I screw up the system that I plan on doing this to.

Really appreciate ya'll taking the time to help out!!

Hi,

Yes, right-click the fax in the Printers folder, select properties. Go to
the Devices tab and click properties. On the Recieve tab, once enabled you
can set it to answer on fewer rings than the regular fax machine.

OK. just sent my first fax! looks like it's working. Now, one last
question. Does the fax applet have to stay open to automatically receive?

No. It will open on first ring if it is set to auto receive or may be
minimized to monitor.
