Faxing a Word document using a fax modem via Microsoft Fax

I am trying to send Word 2003 document to fax recipient using a fax modem in
Windows XP Professional.

The Fax Wizard in Word 2003 correctly creates the fax, using Microsoft Fax
as the fax program.

The Send Fax Wizard opens.
I enter the name and number and click Finish.
The Fax Monitor opens and dials, but after a connection is established,
sends a message “An error occurred while sending the faxâ€.

Why am I getting this error message?

I have successfully sent faxes with Windows XP and this hardware before.
I updated Windows XP to Service Pack 2.
I updated Office 2003 to Service Pack 2.
I have updated Windows and Office with the latest updates.
I am running a DELL Dimension XPS T600.
I use a U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Win 1806 Modem.

The modem logs the following entries:

The Fax Wizard in Word is an outdated relic and should not be used. Use the
Print to Fax... dialog.

There is no such option in Word 2003 as Print to Fax. I think you meant the
Send to option in the File menu, and clicking on Recipient using a Fax Modem.
This option opens the (Word) Fax Wizard.

And even if I send a Fax diectly from the FAX Printer in the Printers and
Fax Icon in Control Panel, I get the same error. This is not a Word issue,
it's a Printers and Fax issue.

There actually is a Print to Fax, it just doesn't go by that name. One of
the printer choices Word will offer you is the Fax printer, hence "print to
fax" means print the document using the fax printer. Haste machine ever
successfully sent a fax by any of the available methods? DO you have the
latest drivers for the modem and is it accepted on the Hardware
Compatibility list:

OK, now I know what you are talking about. Yes, I tried using the Print
dialog box and that generates the same error message, because the "Send Fax
Wizard" that is a part of Microsoft Fax still opens. Printing to the FAX
Printer does NOT open the Word "Fax Wizard" - note "Send Fax Wizard" (from
Microsoft Fax) and "Fax Wizard" (from Word) are two different things. You may
want to re-read my original question below for clarification. But as I
stated, this is not a Word Issue, it's a Microsoft Fax issue.

I am trying to send Word 2003 document to fax recipient using a fax modem
in
Windows XP Professional.

The Fax Wizard in Word 2003 correctly creates the fax, using Microsoft Fax
as the fax program.

The Send Fax Wizard opens.
I enter the name and number and click Finish.
The Fax Monitor opens and dials, but after a connection is established,
sends a message "An error occurred while sending the fax".

Just do what I said. Dismiss the Word Fax Wizard. It is a relic. Use the
Windows XP Fax Fax dialog. It will work.

You're wrong. As I said in my reply (read it again if you have to), it didn't
work.

There is no such option in Word 2003 as Print to Fax. I think you meant
the
Send to option in the File menu, and clicking on Recipient using a Fax
Modem.
This option opens the (Word) Fax Wizard.

And even if I send a Fax diectly from the FAX Printer in the Printers
and
Fax Icon in Control Panel, I get the same error. This is not a Word
issue,
it's a Printers and Fax issue.

I am trying to send Word 2003 document to fax recipient using a fax
modem
in
Windows XP Professional.

The Fax Wizard in Word 2003 correctly creates the fax, using
Microsoft
Fax
as the fax program.

The Send Fax Wizard opens.
I enter the name and number and click Finish.
The Fax Monitor opens and dials, but after a connection is
established,
sends a message "An error occurred while sending the fax".

Why am I getting this error message?

I have successfully sent faxes with Windows XP and this hardware
before.

No, you are wrong, it does not work. As I said in my last reply, I tried what
you said and I got the same error. Read my reply again. It's not a problem
with Word, it's an issue with Microsoft Fax and/or the Modem Driver.

But I re-installed that and I still got the same error.

I also disabled Norton AntiVirus and I still got the same error.

When I had the Norton AntiVirus enabled, just after the fax failed I would
get an error from Norton AntiVirus "Norton Internet Worm protection has
detected an intrustion attempt"

There actually is a Print to Fax, it just doesn't go by that name. One of
the printer choices Word will offer you is the Fax printer, hence "print to
fax" means print the document using the fax printer. Haste machine ever
successfully sent a fax by any of the available methods? DO you have the
latest drivers for the modem and is it accepted on the Hardware

There is no such option in Word 2003 as Print to Fax. I think you meant the
Send to option in the File menu, and clicking on Recipient using a Fax Modem.
This option opens the (Word) Fax Wizard.

And even if I send a Fax diectly from the FAX Printer in the Printers and
Fax Icon in Control Panel, I get the same error. This is not a Word issue,
it's a Printers and Fax issue.

Yes. I see that now. You're right. You appear to be using one of the many
modem drivers incompatible with XP Fax or calling a modem with which XP Fax
cannot negotiate a connection. Very common.

You're wrong. As I said in my reply (read it again if you have to), it
didn't
work.

Just do what I said. Dismiss the Word Fax Wizard. It is a relic. Use the
Windows XP Fax Fax dialog. It will work.

OK, now I know what you are talking about. Yes, I tried using the Print
dialog box and that generates the same error message, because the "Send
Fax
Wizard" that is a part of Microsoft Fax still opens. Printing to the
FAX
Printer does NOT open the Word "Fax Wizard" - note "Send Fax Wizard"
(from
Microsoft Fax) and "Fax Wizard" (from Word) are two different things.
You
may
want to re-read my original question below for clarification. But as I
stated, this is not a Word Issue, it's a Microsoft Fax issue.

See also answers to your questions below, inline.

:

There actually is a Print to Fax, it just doesn't go by that name.
One
of
the printer choices Word will offer you is the Fax printer, hence
"print
to
fax" means print the document using the fax printer. Haste machine
ever
successfully sent a fax by any of the available methods?

Yes.

DO you have the
latest drivers for the modem and is it accepted on the Hardware
Compatibility list:

Yes.

There is no such option in Word 2003 as Print to Fax. I think you
meant
the
Send to option in the File menu, and clicking on Recipient using a
Fax
Modem.
This option opens the (Word) Fax Wizard.

And even if I send a Fax diectly from the FAX Printer in the
Printers
and
Fax Icon in Control Panel, I get the same error. This is not a Word
issue,
it's a Printers and Fax issue.

The Fax Wizard in Word is an outdated relic and should not be
used.
Use
the
Print to Fax... dialog.

I am trying to send Word 2003 document to fax recipient using a
fax
modem
in
Windows XP Professional.

I have successfully sent faxes with Windows XP and this hardware
before.
