Dialup errors 6 and 50--another try

K

I wonder if anyone can come up with a creative solution to this seemingly
impossible problem.

I have XP Pro, SP2, completely updated, working well, etc., except that the
modem cannot hold a connection with my ISP using the dialup connection I
make through Network Connections. It always disconnects right after a
successful logon and either gives an error 6 (handle not found) or an error
50.

The modem log shows the following:

05-27-2006 16:54:10.706 - Dialing.
05-27-2006 16:54:10.722 - Send: ATDT###########<cr>

Now, if I connect to the same ISP number through the HyperTerminal, I can
log on, the connection holds forever, but of course I can't do anything with
it. Here is the modem log with HyperTerminal with a successful connection:

This is a PCI winmodem. I have swapped modems with one that works on my
other PC with XP SP2 but it didn't help. I have changed the PCI slot in
order to change the IRQ.

The modem works fine with Winfax. No problem, as I said, in Hyperterminal. I
have reset the TCP-IP and Winsock and the Winsock catalog according to the
Microsoft instructions.

I have tried various init strings, changes in settings in the TCP-IP
properties for dialup--everything. I have even done a repair install of
Windoes XP SP2 using a slipstreamed CD.

Also tried an RAS service repair utility called rarepair.exe that was
suggested elsewhere for this problem but it only removed the RAS service--it
is an old version, probably for SP1--so I restored Windows to an earlier
time after that one.

My LAN works fine, but when it's out, I need to use the dialup to get to the
Internet.

I am crossposting only to "General" and "Networking" in the MS forums.

I have also talked with the ISP but they can't offer a solution. A laptop I
have with SP2 works OK with the same ISP on the same phone line as the
computer with the problem--it isn't the phone line.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I would have suggested changiung modems, but it looks like you've
already done that. Was the second one the same model as the first? If
yes, it may be a driver issue. See if the manufacturor has an updated
driver.

Yes, they are both the same model, and I have tried various drivers of
various vintages.

Both modems work in my other XP SP2 system with the original drivers.

I've thought about buying another modem, maybe a USB external modem, but if
you look around the Internet it turns out other people have reported the
same thing with other modems, and when they do try a different modem, it
doesn't help.

Again, my modem works fine both with Winfax 10.02 and when using the Windows
HyperTerminal program, except that you can't (or at least I don't know how
to) make the Internet browser work with HyperTerminal.

I am fairly well convinced that this is a problem with either the RAS
service or something is corrupt in the registry. The rarepair.exe program I
mentioned in the first post is a RAS uninstall then reinstall in the command
prompt, and it is the only thing anyone has said actually works for this
problem. But when I used it, it only uninstalled the RAS, did not reinstall
it--maybe because it was meant for SP1 and not SP2--and without the RAS you
can't even create a dialup connection--everything is grayed out in the
Network Connections dialog boxes.

If you've got no RAS service, you've got your problem. Is it set to
automatically start? I think it should be.

There's a thing to check: in the device manager, is there a Dial-up
Adapter, listed under network adapters? There should be.

Yes, I have the RAS service. I just meant to say that when I tried the 3rd
party program, rapair.exe, last week, it uninstalled the RAS service but
didn't reinstall it. But I got it right back again with a system restore. It
is there, set to automatic, and started.

As for the second issure--no, there is no dial-up adapter listed in Device
Manager under Network adapters. Where did the dial-up adapter go, and how do
I get it back?

Maybe that's the problem....

I'm dead certian it is. Hang on while I do a little research.

I'm back. Forgive me, My computer is both Modemless, and running
windows2000. This should be close, though.

Go to your dial up connection. Right click on it. Select properties.

Click on networking->install->adapter

Scroll down the list to Microsoft, and Select Dial-up adapter.

Click Add.

See if that helps.

Paul,

I cannot find a dial-up adapter anywhere on this computer, but recall it
well from previous versions of Windows.

I just checked /another/ computer, a /fully-functional/ Dell laptop with XP,
SP2, two dialup connections that work perfectly, etc., and there is no
dial-up adapter listed under Network Adapters in Device Manager in that
computer, even when I click "show hidden", nor will the install command in
the dialup configuration list a dialup adapter under protocols.

I have followed all the steps in the MS KB article 825826--no help.

Again, I can dial up my ISP in HyperTerminal, login, etc., using the same
init string for the modem as under dialup connections.

Somethiong is telling the modem to disconnect immediately after login under
dialup but not in HyperTerminal--I just don't know what it is.

As I said, this is a very subtle and elusive problem.

At this point, I have no Idea. Modems will either work, or they won't.
It's got to be in Windows.

Short of a reinstall, you might want to try

sfc /scannow

from the command prompt

start->run cmd

Another thought is you have a RAM problem that's inteferring with
normal business.

Paul,

Thanks for all your work on this.

I've already done a repair install and, a couple of times, an sfc /scannow,
and my memory has tested out OK.

I just sent for a new, but cheap, hardware modem (Nspire PCI, with an Intel
chipset, apparently not a Winmodem) which I should get in 3 or 4 days. I
will let you know.

Paul,

I reran sfc /scannow in command mode and rechecked the memory.

I replaced the modem with a hardware based modem with an Intel chip.

The error 6 and error 50 problems persist.

Clearly, this is a Windows problem, unless it is a problem with the ISP. As
I said much earlier, it has been reported in various forums in exactly the
same way, and no one seems to have a solution. I haven't been able to get
Microsoft support to figure it out, either, even a guy in the WMI section.

The only other clue I have is that I cannot /stop/ the RAS service once it
has started. (I can disable it and it won't start then, but once I've
started it I can't stop it. I have no idea if this means anything at all.

I guess I am not going to get the dialup to work without reinstalling
Windows from scratch, something that doesn't seem worth the effort and
aggravation just to get dialup Internet access working when I only need it
occasionally.
