Faxes won't send - "not connected"

When I try to send a fax by printing from Word to
the "fax" printer, it goes through the send fax wizard and
seems to queue the fax, but the modem never dials. The
fax queue appears empty and the header says "Fax Queue
(Not Connected)". Mousing over the fax printer icon in
the system tray shows documents pending. How do I get the
faxes to go out?

Is the modem switched On? Are you using an analog phone line? Did faxing
ever work on that system? Is there any event in the EventVwr (start | Run |
EventVwr) from Fax Service?
