Fax4Outlook vs MSFax?

I was shocked to learn that Fax4Outlook only
created "pointers" in the outlook inbox & sent items
folders pointing to the faxes in the fax console!

Because of the instability of the "pointers" I was
constantly loosing my faxes and all of their customized
properties. Their tech support claimed that this was by
design!? I have now lost all of my faxes from the last 8
months! Move on.

The good news is that I have learned how to use MSFax and
I have developed a process of dealing with its faxes so
that, with a little more work than an email, they appear
in my outlook inbox and sent items folder.

When I send a fax through outlook, it appears in the sent
items folder as well as the fax console.

When I receive a fax in the fax console, I email it to
myself and it appears in the inbox. If I use categories,
subjects & contacts appropriately, all of the faxes are
searchable as easily as all other outlook items.
Unfortunately I have not found a way to make the fax
attachments appear in the preview window.

The question that I have is this, are the faxes in the
inbox and sent items folders really in the PST file or
are they only "pointers" to the fax console? My concern
is for the long term stability of my communications data.

I assume you mean Windows XP Fax, not Microsoft Fax. If you have emailed
the faxes to yourself, they are in your PST file, but Outlook will not
preview TIF files. Plus, you should still have a backup of your faxes in the
Fax Console, right?

Yes windows XP Fax and office xp.

In addition to maintaining all faxes in the fax console I
have configured XP Fax to store a copy in my own Fax
Archive folder.

Here's an interesting question, when I open a fax from
the fax console the windows picture and fax viewer
displays the image. When I click on the next image
button, or the previous image button the windows picture
and fax viewer does not display the previous for next
fax? I can't figure out why windows picture and fax
viewer displays the images that it does with their
seemingly random dates.

When I open a fax from the fax console with the windows
picture and fax viewer, and I click on the "next" button
it does not display the next fax? It displays some other
image that I have opened sometime in the past.

I'll take your word for it. Current versions no longer use the Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer, so I can't test it. Windows XP Fax is a pretty
minimally featured program that doesn't do much nor do it logically.

You may be seeing temp files that are in your Temporary Internet Files
folder. Right click one of the unwanted images and go to
'Properties|Location'; you'll see the path to the image.

Running Disk Cleanup should clear it up, it that's where the image(s) are
coming from.
