fax tone on phone

J

This is strange and I can not find an answer anywhere. I am running
Vista Home Premium. I do not have a fax on my system but I do have a
Cannon MP460 that has scan / copy. I can not find any fax related
software running.

I have a DSL line, going into a SpeedStream modeum and a Linksys
wireless router.

Whenever the DSL line is plugged in and the phone rings a fax answers
it! And, if we make an outgoing call, after about 30 seconds the fax
tone interrupts. Unplug the DSL line and everything works just fine.

Anybody have any ideas about what is going on?

Thanks.

Have you got a microfilter on the main hub of your phone line, or
microfilters on all your phone sockets? You need these to filter out the
DSL signal to your phone equipment so that it does not interfere with the
DSL signal.

Yes, I do have microfilters on all of the telephone lines and on the
line going into the computer. I even switched out one of the
telephone microfilters thinking that perhaps it was no longer
functioning. And, I have switched out the filter on the line going
into the computer.

Thank you for the reply.

Are you sure its a FAX?
Do you have a modem in your PC and is it connected to the phone line?
Do you have a broadband router that has dial up if the DSL is down?

When you say the DSL line is plugged in.. what are you plugging in?

As a first guess I would say you have a modem in the computer and you are
plugging it into the phone line even though you are on DSL and don't need
to.

You make a good point about FAX or modem ... it is a fax / modem like
tone. I went into the control panel and checked to see what was there
for modem and there is not anything listed (I thought I did this
before, but wanted to make sure given your suggestion). I also looked
through all of the components listed under Device Manager and again,
no modem (or fax).

As far as the configuration goes, it is:
DSL to microfilter which has 2 export connections: (1) for computer
and (2) for phone -- I am connecting into the computer for the
computer and phone for the phone. On the computer side, the line goes
into a DSL modem which then is connected to a Linksys router which is
then connected into the ethernet connection on the computer. I do not
have anything plugged into my modem on the computer. I have looked
through DSL modem (which is a SpeedStream) and wireless router
documentation and I do not find any information about a fax or dial up
for a modem ... but I will look again, never know, I may have missed
it.

I do have a NVIDIA network controller but I have not been able to find
out much about it ... did not think it could be doing it but I am
starting to suspect everything!

There is only one line coming out of the wall and it is configured as
described above ... so, I do not think that is the issue unless I am
missing something.

Thank you very much for the response.

Do you have a fax machine or modem connected to the DSL line elsewhere? The
tone you hear is on the line and not necessarily due to anything in the
computer you are connecting to the line.

If you are only connected to the router using a network connection it can't
be the computer causing the noise so I think you can forget about looking
there for now.

Can you list the model numbers for the router and modem and who you
broadband supplier is and someone may well have a similar setup.
(I doubt if I have as I am in the UK.)

I am responding to the last post, but I wanted to thank everyone for
your response. Seems like it can not be the computer, right? Must be
a fax or modem someplace else! But, I know I don't have a fax and I
am equally sure that I don't have a modem hooked up. Wait ... uh, my
alarm system does call out and it must use a modem. So, I do a little
experiment and disconnect the wires and ... no more problem. And,
while I am disconnecting the wires in the alarm system I can hear it
"clicking" trying to connect the phone system.

Turns out we never added a filter to the phone line for the alarm and
the alarm system hears all the noise without the filter and decides it
needs to grab the telephone system because someone is messing with it!

Now, why disconnecting the DSL line to the computer stopped the
problem is still a mystery but at least we can solve the problem and
get back the phone line.

Thank you all, very much, for your assistance. I feel foolish at this
point but the logic everyone has shown has help me walk through all of
the connections and remember the connection hidden in the closet
behind all the clothes. Thanks.
