Fax software for Win XP?

C

cquante

First let me thank all of you that have helped me in the past. You've
been great!!

I have recently joined the unemployed, and find myself having to fax
information to the unemployment office, etc. I just spent $7.00 at
Mail Plus to fax 5 pages to a local number!! I've checked the
priceless list, and didn't see anything that would allow me to fax
from my pc. I did find some software at Freeware World Team, but I'm
really looking for something simple. I want to be able to use my
scanner to scan a document, (possibly multiple pages), and fax it. I
did find one program, but it doesn't work on XP. Any suggestions?

On another note, I'm Pegasus Mail as my email client after many years
with Eudora. (Don't ask, it's a long sad tale of woe.) For some
reason, I am unable to figure out how to configure it to allow html
images to show in emails. If Pegasus can't do this, is there a better
freeware alternative?

Thanks in advance!

Charlie

I've had horrible problems with the different versions of Winfax that
I've tried, including the one I bought retail. I've also tried other fax
software that I could not live with.

The issue in each case seemed to involve the automatic receive function
-- which ties up some of the computer's resources and interferes with
other things. This function is memory-resident. Winfax came loaded to
the gills, wildly bloated with things that I have no earthly use for --
who needs or wants an entire collection of cover sheet alternatives
(cover sheets with artwork, with cartoons, etc.)? The program seemed to
be designed to fill the needs of a person whose religion is devout
faxing. What I'd really like is a lightweight program -- something that
I can load to send a fax, and then get out. Getting everything "go" to
receive a fax is much more complicated, and it's here where, as I've
said above, I've experienced problems I could not live with.

So far, I've done just as well by taking any scans that I want to send
and just attaching them to emails.

You should be able to fax from XP natively..Fax is not installed by default
so you'll have to go into "Add / Remove Programs" and install it.

Windows XP has fax software built in. If you did not install it go to
Add/Remove Programs and install it from the Windows Components.

If Pegasus doesn't do it well enough there is always Outlook Express.
People belittle OE for its HTML handling but if that's what you want
then it does it nicely.

Here are a few more choices with Pegasus .

Tools > Options > Incoming Mail & tick > Where a choice
of format exists, display the fancy version .

You can add html , through the Content Viewers panel .
http://antivirus.about.com/library/blpegasus.htm
Pegasus Mail v4.01 ships with a viewer control file that, by default,
makes it very difficult for users to execute anything that could be
dangerous. David made an exception for the highly prevalent
Microsoft Word documents, so care should be exercised when a .DOC
attachment is received. Users can also add viewer control
definitions that either suppress that type of file altogether, or
else issues a clear warning to the user when they attempt to open
the file. These settings can be changed under Tools | Options |
Content Viewers. Additionally, enterprise administrators can make
the additions globally by modifying a single file.

Should as long as an analog modem is plugged into the filtered line used for
voice...If you mean will WinFax work through your DSL modem, the answer is
no.

Hey there,

On another note, I'm Pegasus Mail as my email client after many years
with Eudora. (Don't ask, it's a long sad tale of woe.) For some
reason, I am unable to figure out how to configure it to allow html
images to show in emails. If Pegasus can't do this, is there a better

Which version of Pegasus are you using? I've got 4.21c in place, and
it gives me the choice of viewing HTML messages as "Lazy HTML" by
default with a warning. I can choose to never be warned (in the
warning window that automatically comes up), but I left the warning in
place, because I prefer text.

Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows
Components, tick Fax Services box.

Thanks to everyone! This works perfectly for my needs. I guess I
should stop slamming Microsoft for a while..

I'm using the same version, but don't get that choice. I'll have to
dig into it a bit further I guess.

A fax requires a voice phone line to work

Any DSL lines that handles voice transmissions (most do) can also handle
faxes.

What is being said is that *YOU NEED A FAX MODEM* on a computer to
communicate with a standalone *FAX MACHINE*

A DSL modem will not work.
