fax software doesn't find modem

The fax software doesn't list a modem in the choose a device tab. PC doctor
says the modem is there and working but the software doesn't seem to know
that. I connect to the internet with dsl but did plug into the normal phone
line to try to fax. The online hp tech. said I have to have a dial up account
for the fax software to work. That doesn't make sense to me.Help???

What fax software?
You have run the test utility on your modem? often within properties for
your modem
