Faxing Blues

Can the faxing facility in XP Home be utilized if one is on a broadband
connection, apparently not.

I have a DSL account with Optusnet.com.au. I've installed the (windows) fax
console and tried to set it up, however, the wizard tells me there is no
modem connected to my machine. That's because my DSL (D-Link 302G) modem is
actually a network device. Optus tells me that I need a separate fax
machine as Windows faxing is not supported on DSL.
Is my only option to purchase a fax machine? I do very little faxing.

Or you could simply buy a standard telephone modem card for the system. These are very cheap.

Thanks Ronnie,
Are you saying that if I get a standard card I can install that and have it
plugged into my DSL LINE?
Would I also need a filter? I thought that the DSL modem would override the
standard modem card.

No, the standard FAX modem would need to be plugged into a regular analog telephone line. The FAX would be configured to use this modem. This would not interfere with the DSL connection. Most DSL wall connection outlets have a jack for the standard telephone line that bypasses the DSL line.

A much simpler solution would be to to use one of the many online FAX services. These services are very competitive and cheap. They assign you a FAX number in your local area code and when you receive a FAX to that number, they email the FAX to you. When you consider the expense of the FAX modem plus the cost of a dedicated FAX line, these services can be very economical. Here is a link to one of these services. You can find many more using Google.
